Spring seems to be arriving early in Asheville, NC. Though we will see a brief dip of the thermometer through the end of the week, western North Carolinians are welcoming the arrival of spring colors and warmth.
We live in an area of unique beauty and splendor. In this article and the next, we want to help new residents and tourists find the perfect spring drives. Enjoy ten great Asheville drives in spring.
1) Linville Falls and Crabtree Falls
As trees and flowers begin to bloom, Asheville residents can enjoy diving to and hiking Linville Falls and Crabtree Falls. From downtown, drive north on the Blue Ridge Parkway, beyond the overlooks and views near Craggy Gardens and Mount Mitchell. Both waterfall areas feature relatively easy three to four-mile loop hikes.
2) Biltmore Estate
Located near the center of Asheville, Biltmore Estate is the historical vacation residence of the Vanderbilts. It is the largest home in America. Thousands of tourists visit the Biltmore in spring to enjoy the blooming flowers and well-kept grounds. Activities to enjoy, include:
- Walking paths
- Mountain biking
- Hiking
- Restaurant and winery
- The Inn
3) Craggy Gardens
Just twenty miles from downtown, Craggy Gardens is one of the most popular stops on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Featuring rhododendrons, wildflowers and incredible views, visitors enjoy hiking the short loop trail or picnicking in the gardens. If you are planning a drive to Craggy, consider adding a trip to Crabtree Falls as well.
4) Turtleback Falls and Rainbow Falls
Transylvania County is home to thousands of waterfalls, attracting thousands of tourists each year. From Asheville, visitors are treated to beautiful views as they drive through Brevard toward Lake Toxaway. Once you park, Turtleback Falls is about two miles along a relatively easy trail. You will pass Rainbow Falls on your way to Turtleback.
Be prepared, if the weather is warm, the slick rocks at Turtleback are perfect for sliding and swimming.
5) The Blue Ridge Parkway Toward Boone
If you have a full day to drive and enjoy spring in western North Carolina, consider driving from Asheville to Boone on the Blue Ridge Parkway. There will be no shortage of incredible views and great places to stop and picnic or take a short hike.
